How to Prevent Candle Tunnelling: Tips and Tricks

How to Prevent Candle Tunnelling: Tips and Tricks

The average life of a scented candle is around 40 hours. However, if your candle is experiencing tunnelling, it will probably only last around 20 hours. Tunnelling occurs when the wax near the wick burns faster than the wax on the outside of the candle. This creates a tunnel down the middle of the candle. In this blog post, we will discuss how to prevent tunnelling and extend the life of your candles!

1.Trim the Wick

The first step to preventing candle tunnelling is to trim the wick. A long wick can create a lot of heat, which can cause the wax to burn too quickly. Trim the wick to about ¼ inch before each use.

If your candle has already begun tunnelling, you can try relighting the wick from the outside. This will help to even out the burn and prevent further tunnelling.

2. Avoid Drafts

Drafts can also cause candles to burn too quickly. Make sure your candles are placed in a draft-free area.

If you live in a colder climate, you may want to consider using flameless candles. Flameless candles are not affected by drafts and will last just as long as traditional candles.

3. Keep the Candle at a Steady Temperature

Candles should be kept at a steady temperature. If they are too hot, they will burn quickly. If they are too cold, the wax will not melt properly, and tunnelling may occur. Try to keep your candles in an area that is between 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you are having trouble keeping your candles at a steady temperature, you may want to consider using a candle warmer. A candle warmer will keep the wax at a consistent temperature, preventing tunnelling from occurring.

4.Use a Scented Candle Holder

Scented candle holders help to distribute the scent of the candle evenly. They also protect the candle from drafts and keep it at a steady temperature.

If you do not have a scented candle holder, you can try using a bowl or plate. Make sure the container is heat resistant, though, as it may get hot while the candle is burning.

5. Do Not Overfill the Candle

When you first light your candle, the wax will melt quickly. This is because the wick is new and has not been burned down yet. As the candle burns, it will consume the wax around the wick. If you overfill the candle, there will not be enough room for the wax to melt properly, and tunnelling may occur.

Only fill your candle to about ¾ of the way full. This will give the wax enough room to melt and will help to prevent tunnelling.

Conclusion

By following these tips, you can prevent candle tunnelling and extend the life of your candles! Try using a quality candle, trim the wick, avoid drafts, keep the candle at a steady temperature, and not overfilling the candle. These tips will help to ensure that your candles burn evenly and last longer!
